Ghost Hound in Hawaii (Circa 1993)
This happened about 30 years ago when I was stationed at NAS Barber's Point, Hawaii. This navy base has since been decommissioned, but was full of old buildings and structures, as the old Ewa Marine Air Station was there. You could still see the old Marine airstrip in the back woods. There were still bullet holes in the old airstrip from WWII. Lots of old abandoned covered revetments and a few old pillboxes lined the beach. The base was kind of creepy even back then.
I lived on base and one night me and my neighbor 'Tim' went for a drive around the base. I was driving my Chevy S-10 pickup; the top of the hood was about gut level. I'd say it was 4 feet. Don't know where we were headed and I don't know the exact time. There were orange-colored street lights, so it wasn't entirely dark. I was driving past an empty field and there was a chain link fence along the road. We were driving no faster than 30 mph. As was always the case back then, my head was on a swivel and I was well aware of everything around me. We both were.
As I'm driving along this fence I suddenly catch a glimpse of something running across the field. It was slightly behind us but running at a 45-degree angle on an intercept course. Keep in mind that I'm driving, so most of my attention is on the road. Whatever this was that coming at us would be stopped by the fence, I'm thinking. Wrong.
This thing went right through the fence as if it wasn't there, and that's when I caught a full glimpse of it. It looked like a massive wolf, but it was on fire. This flaming hound went right through the fence and continued its trajectory right for my truck. It ran right at me and I thought it hit me right at the driver's front quarter panel. I slammed the brakes, coming to a full stop.
And just like that, it was gone. No sign of it.
Me: Tim, did you see that?
Tim: What, you mean that giant wolf?
Me: Don't (mess) around man, tell me what you saw?
Tim: I saw what I assume you saw: a giant flaming wolf tearing across that field and coming right at us. I figured that's why you stopped, I thought it hit us!
We were both spooked, but we got out of the truck and looked around. There were no animal tracks. No damage to the truck. No dead animal. The fence was intact.
We both got a chance to get a really good look at this thing before the 'impact'. We both agree that it looked like a giant wolf. But on fire. With flaming eyes. Its shoulder was as high as the top of the hood of my truck.
Never seen it before or since. Never heard of anyone else seeing anything like this.
Interesting! I spent a little time at Barber's Point back in the late 80s flying in and out of Kure Atoll and Midway Islands. I wonder if you saw a Hellhound?
