Crystal Castle in the Sky
You ever see something that you know is not what you're seeing? They say seeing is believing, but what if what you see leads you to disbelieve your own eyes? That's the basis of this little story.
A few years back, maybe 2017 but before COVID, my wife and I were driving out to the casino. It had recently rained or it was raining a ways off, as we could see a raibow. The rainbow ended over some low hills. Where the rainbow was hitting the hill, we saw a crystal castle.
The crystal castle had multiple spires. And it looked to be crystal or glass, as you could see through it. It was the colors of the rainbow. The crystal castle sat at the top of the hill. It had not been there before. It was a ways off, I'd say maybe 5 miles away, but I'm not good at judging distances like that. It was far enough that we could not see details, but close enough that we could see that it was for all intents and purposes, a crystal castle.
We live in Port Angeles. The crystal castle appeared to be in Discovery Bay, which is southeast of Sequim. We first noticed the crystal castle as we left Sequim. The road between Sequim and Discovery Bay is windy. Dipping down into dips and winding around hills. The road is lined with lots of trees. When we first noticed the castle, we were at a high point and lost sight of it as we dipped and wound our way along. We would catch sight of it again as we drove along, only to lose sight of it multiple times.
I was driving, so I asked my wife what she saw for clarification. She described what she saw as a crystal castle with multiple spires. She was dismissive of what we saw. Obviously we could not have seen what we think we saw, she said. It's obviously not a crystal castle in the sky! Yet as we drove, it would pop up. Again and again.
It's the rainbow, she said!
Obviously, it's the rainbow, I answered. The 'thing' is in the rainbow. Maybe part of the rainow? But why would a rainbow show as a crystal castle? What could cause a rainbow to show as a crystal castle?
I don't know, she answered, but it's obviously not what you're saying it is! Yet she was the the one who first described it as a crystal castle.
Neither of us drink nor smoke. It was a cloudy day with plenty of sunlight peaking through. Recently, I asked my wife about that day, but she's very dismissive of what she saw. On some level, I think she believes I pranked her, somehow getting her to see something I made up. I still don't know what we saw. We never saw it again.
